For refinished, acrylic, and fiberglass tubs, scrubbing is actually the wrong approach — it scratches the surface. For porcelain, it’s just unnecessary work when you use the right products. Here are the methods that get the tub clean without scrubbing. If you’re not sure what material your tub is — especially if it’s been recoated — the complete DIY bathtub refinishing guide explains the different surface types and how to identify them.

Method 1: Foaming Spray and Wait

The easiest no-scrub method. The product does the work while you do something else.

Scrubbing Bubbles Mega Shower Foamer — spray on, let it foam and sit for 5–10 minutes, wipe or rinse off. The surfactants dissolve soap scum without mechanical action. Works on porcelain, tile, fiberglass, and acrylic (not for refinished tubs — see below).

For refinished surfaces, use Rejuvenate Soap Scum Remover instead — it’s specifically formulated to be safe for coated surfaces. Same idea: spray, wait, wipe with a soft cloth.

Method 2: Daily Spray — Prevent Before It Builds

The real secret to no-scrub cleaning is not letting buildup happen in the first place.

Method Daily Shower Spray — spray on after showering while the surface is still wet, don’t rinse. The surfactants prevent soap scum from bonding to the surface over time. Use daily for a week or two and you’ll notice a significant reduction in how much soap scum accumulates.

This is the easiest maintenance habit for any tub type. The product is non-toxic, safe for all surfaces including refinished.

Method 3: The Dishwasher Tablet Trick

Wet a dishwasher tablet (the powder/block kind, not a gel pod) and use it on the tub surface. The alkaline detergent and enzymes break down soap scum on contact with almost no friction required.

Works surprisingly well on fiberglass and porcelain. Not recommended for refinished tubs — the alkalinity is higher than ideal for coatings.

Method 4: Baking Soda Paste + Vinegar (No Scrubbing Version)

Most guides tell you to make a paste and scrub. You don’t have to:

  1. Sprinkle baking soda generously over the tub surface
  2. Spray white vinegar over the baking soda — it will fizz
  3. Let it sit for 20–30 minutes (the fizzing action does the cleaning work)
  4. Rinse thoroughly

The CO₂ bubbles from the reaction physically dislodge grime. No scrubbing. Safe for most surfaces.

Note: Baking soda is a very mild abrasive. For refinished tubs, use this method only for stubborn isolated stains, not as a regular cleaner. For a full look at products safe for coated surfaces, the guide to the best cleaner for a refinished bathtub is the definitive reference.

Method 5: Automatic Cleaner Systems

Scrubbing Bubbles Continuous Clean Drop-Ins — tablet that goes in the toilet tank isn’t quite right here, but they do make in-tank cleaners. For the tub specifically, there aren’t great automatic systems as of 2026 — the spray-and-wipe methods above are more practical.

For Heavy Buildup That Needs Soaking

If the tub hasn’t been cleaned in a while and has heavy soap scum or mineral buildup, a longer soak approach works:

  1. Plug the drain
  2. Fill with a few inches of warm water
  3. Add 1–2 cups of white vinegar
  4. Let soak for 30 minutes to an hour
  5. Drain and wipe down — the loosened deposits wipe off easily

For really tough mineral deposits, CLR Bath & Kitchen diluted per instructions and left to soak works well on porcelain and fiberglass.

What Not to Use for No-Scrub Cleaning

  • Magic Erasers — still micro-abrasive even when you’re not pressing hard
  • Abrasive powder cleaners (Comet, Ajax) — the grit scratches regardless of how lightly you apply
  • Anything requiring scrubbing pads — defeats the purpose

Keeping It Easy Long-Term

The single best thing you can do: wipe down the tub after every use. A quick pass with a damp cloth removes soap and water before they dry and bond to the surface. Five seconds after every shower = almost no cleaning needed ever.

Add a weekly spray of Method Daily Shower Spray and a monthly wipe-down with a soft cloth and Rejuvenate. You’ll essentially never scrub again.
